Boot Manager is compressed : How to fix it!

Author: gregjroberts | Filed under: Blog

I’ve just been asked to fix a computer with a compressed Boot manager! :) – the first suggestion would not be to compress your hard disk unless you know what you are doing!, However in this case i also thought it may be useful to blog the fix :)

Boot Manager is compressed

If by accident having compressed the entire boot partition, then Vista will display the following error:

BOOTMGR is compressed. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

Check points for fixing compressed boot-manager:

Boot into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and perform a “Startup Repair”.

If the above doesn’t solve the problem then boot into WinRE again, but when selecting the Vista-installation, then press “Load Drivers” (Instead of “Next”) and use the mini Windows Explorer to right-click the boot-drive and deselect “Compress this Drive” and choose Apply to sub-folders and files.

If that also fails then boot into WinRE again, and go to the “Command Prompt” and execute these commands:

  • compact /U C:\bootmgr
  • compact /U C:\ntldr

If you for some strange reason have lost your Vista DVD, then you can also use a Windows 2000 / XP install CD and enter the recovery console instead and execute the following commands:

  • attrib -c c:\bootmgr

attrib -c c:\ntldr

EDIT – i completely forgot!

If Startup Repair isn’t able to automatically fix the issue, follow these steps:
1. Boot to the Vista installation DVD and select Repair Your Computer.
2. Select Command Prompt from the System Recovery Tools menu.
3. Run “bootrec /fixboot” (no quotes).
4. Exit Command Prompt and restart.

N950 User Photo wall!

Author: gregjroberts | Filed under: Blog

Hi Everyone,

With many thanks to @h0pbeat (Twitter / Arek Stopczynski)’s great idea – i have finally got round to doing an N950 user/owner photowall!
Apologies to Arek for me taking so long with doing this! I seem to always be too busy!

Ok, well the idea is simple, you take a picture, upload it, and then view the wonderful wall as it grows! :)
Please do share this page with all N950 owners! Don’t worry – you can hide your face, or be creative if needed! :)

If you need an image removing or duplicates sorted, please message me here or on Twitter! :)

So without further adooo! The two links you need are!:

1) THE IMAGE UPLOAD FORMhttp://greg-roberts.com/?page_id=285

2) THE PHOTO-WALLhttp://greg-roberts.com/N950Wall/

Note : I’m hoping it is simple enough not to have to many problems – but start filling it up and let’s see! :)

HDR / Tone-map Photography – A quick how to

Author: gregjroberts | Filed under: Blog

high dynamic range imaging (HDRI or just HDR) is a set of techniques that allows a greater dynamic range between the lightest and darkest areas of an image than current standard digital imaging techniques or photographic methods. This wide dynamic range allows HDR images to more accurately represent the range of intensity levels found in real scenes, ranging from direct sunlight to faint starlight, and is often captured by way of a plurality of differently exposed pictures of the same subject matter.

OK, well i have a few HDR photos on my website – and if you are wondering how, then hopefully this should help! There are quite a few ways to acheive this type of result, my recommendation is (best to worse) as follows:

  1. Take a bracketed set of photos using a DSLR, use Photoshop to convert them to JPG’s, Use Photomatix to convert to an HDR. Then finish using Light-room/Photoshop
  2. Take a single RAW file, use Photoshop to convert it to multiple to JPG’s ensuring to change the Exposure on EACH photo (-2 0 +2 or -2 -1 0 +1 +2), Use Photomatix to convert to an HDR. Then finish using Light-room/Photoshop.
  3. Do the same as above, but from a single JPG or picture file. It will work but the quality will not quite be the same

Software: (links open in a new window)

Photomatix
Photoshop
Adobe Lightroom

Start V Finish

Samsung Galaxy SII (S2 – I9100) – Tips for a longer battery life

Author: gregjroberts | Filed under: Blog

I’ve had the SGS2 for quite a while now, and i am quite a heavy user. Whilst i have tried many many battery saving techniques a lot of them are very intrusive, by this i mean, they either partially work, or they require you to have lots of functions turned off, most of the time.

I have finally settled on a few tools and tricks that help me out, so thought i would share them here.
